The short answer: for most players, a set of KontrolFreek thumbstick caps is the best add-on. They fit over the sticks with no tools, and KontrolFreek says they improve grip and aim. eXtremeRate’s shells and side rails change much more, adding a new look or trigger stops (switches that shorten how far the triggers press). But you have to open the controller to fit them.
Add-ons are the cheapest way to make an Xbox controller feel like yours, and they make easy gifts. Here are our picks, starting with the ones anyone can fit.

KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy thumbsticks
Players who want better aim and grip without changing controllers.
- FitsXbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers
- In the box2 thumbstick caps
- Height added10 mm right, 6.5 mm left
- ToolsNone
These caps fit over the controller's own thumbsticks. The right one is high-rise, adding 10 mm for finer aiming, and the left is mid-rise, adding 6.5 mm for steadier movement. Both are dished in the middle and made of a non-slip rubber.
KontrolFreek says the grip means less force, so less strain on wrists, hands and thumbs, and that the caps protect the original sticks from wear.
What we like
- Nothing to open: they go on over the sticks
- Taller right stick for finer aiming
- Non-slip rubber grip
- Help protect the original thumbsticks
Watch out for
- A limited-edition black design, so stock may come and go
- The listing warns the packaging may not show the latest compatibility
Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable
Anyone still buying AA batteries for an Xbox Series X|S controller.
- Made byMicrosoft
- FitsXbox Series X|S controller
- Full chargeUnder 4 hours
- In the boxBattery and USB-C cable
Microsoft's own rechargeable battery replaces the AA batteries in the controller. You can charge it while you play, or afterwards, even while the Xbox is in standby, and it fully charges in under four hours.
Xbox Support names this battery for the Xbox Series X|S controller, and warns that third-party battery packs may not be compatible with that controller, which makes this the safe choice.
What we like
- No more buying AA batteries
- Charges while you play or while the Xbox is in standby
- Full charge in under four hours
- Made by Microsoft
Watch out for
- It charges through the cable; there's no charging stand
- The listing doesn't say how many hours a charge lasts
KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy Performance Kit
A stocking filler for a player who has everything else.
- FitsXbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers
- In the boxThumbsticks and grips
- ColorPurple
This kit pairs KontrolFreek's Performance Thumbsticks with its Performance Grips. The maker says the thumbsticks are shaped to reduce fatigue in wrists, hands and thumbs, and that the grips wick away moisture to keep hands dry.
It suits a player who would rather unwrap something small than a whole new controller.
What we like
- Thumbsticks and grips in one box
- Grips made to keep hands dry
- Fits Xbox One and Series X|S controllers
Watch out for
- The listing doesn't say which thumbstick heights are included
- The listing doesn't say how the grips attach
eXtremeRate Flexor grips and trigger stops
Older teens and adults happy to open their controller.
- FitsXbox Series X|S controller (model 1914) only
- Trigger travelShortened to 5 mm
- In the box2 side grips, trigger stop switches, opening tool
- ToolsOpening tool included
This kit replaces the controller's left and right side panels with rubber grips that have a 3D diamond texture. It also adds switches that cut the trigger travel to 5 mm, a pro-controller feature, for faster shots.
Fitting it means taking the controller apart. eXtremeRate includes an opening tool and a step-by-step video guide.
What we like
- Adds 5 mm trigger stops to the controller you already own
- Grippy textured side panels
- Opening tool and video guide included
Watch out for
- Fits only the Xbox Series X|S controller, not Xbox One controllers
- You have to open the controller, and Microsoft's warranty won't cover damage from changes like this
eXtremeRate replacement front shell
Giving a plain controller a new face without buying a new one.
- FitsXbox Series X|S controller (model 1914) only
- In the boxFront shell, T8H screwdriver, 5 screws
- DesignArmor of Ragnarok pattern
- ToolsScrewdriver included
This is a new front shell, the outer case that holds the face buttons, in an Armor of Ragnarok pattern. eXtremeRate says it fits flush on all sides and sits properly on all the clips, and that it feels smooth and resists slipping.
You take off the controller's original front shell and fit this one in its place. The box includes the screwdriver and screws, and eXtremeRate has an installation video on YouTube.
What we like
- A new look without replacing the controller
- Screwdriver and screws included
- Installation video from the maker
Watch out for
- Fits only the Xbox Series X|S controller, not Xbox One controllers
- You have to take the controller apart; the buttons and other parts aren't included
What to check before you buy
- Which controller do they have? The Xbox Series X|S controller has a Share button in the middle and a USB-C charging port; older Xbox One controllers have neither. eXtremeRate’s shell and side rails fit only the Series X|S controller (model 1914). The KontrolFreek caps and kit fit both.
- Fit on, or open up? Thumbstick caps go on over the sticks. eXtremeRate’s shell and side rails mean unscrewing the controller, which is a job for a careful teen or adult.
- Batteries. The Series X|S controller runs on AA batteries or Microsoft’s rechargeable battery. Xbox Support says rechargeable AA batteries “don’t charge in the controller.”
- The warranty. In the US and Canada, Microsoft covers a standard controller for 90 days. Its warranty doesn’t cover “damage caused by repairs or modifications done by someone other than Microsoft or a Microsoft authorized service provider, or damage caused by using another company’s parts.” A clip-on cap doesn’t involve opening the controller; if you do open it, take your time. Check the current warranty for your country.
- “Modded” is a warning sign. Add-ons that change the look or feel are fine. Xbox’s Community Standards ban using “unauthorized hardware or accessories,” and anything sold with rapid fire or macros can break those rules: see what can get you banned.
For a player: caps for aim, side rails for trigger stops, a shell for looks. For a gift: the KontrolFreek kit or the rechargeable battery, which need no tools and suit almost any Xbox player.
When an add-on isn’t enough
Back paddle kits that fit inside a standard controller, such as eXtremeRate’s Victor X, need soldering. Plug-in paddle adapters exist, but many add macros, which can break Xbox’s rules. If the player wants back paddles (extra buttons on the back), a pro controller is the simpler buy. For a controller in their own colors from the start, see Xbox Design Lab, or our guide to custom Xbox controllers for every option.
How we rate
We score every pick out of 10 on four things, weighted for what matters when you buy a controller, or an add-on for one: fits your console and your hands (35%), meaning the Xbox and PC models the maker says it works with, wired or wireless, and the grip and layout; build and how it holds up (30%), judged from the maker's specifications and warranty and the recurring praise and complaints in verified owners' reviews; features you will actually use (20%), like back paddles, trigger stops, swappable thumbsticks and battery life; and value (15%).
We have not tested these products ourselves. We read the makers' listings, compatibility notes and support pages, and the patterns in owners' reviews. No brand pays for placement, and a commission cannot buy a higher rating. When a pick changes, we will say so on this page.
Common questions
Do thumbstick caps work on the Elite Series 2?
The KontrolFreek caps here are sold for the standard Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers. The Elite Series 2 has swappable thumbsticks of its own, so check the maker’s compatibility list before buying caps for one.
Will an add-on stop stick drift?
No. Caps and shells sit on the outside and don’t change the sensors inside the sticks. If a controller drifts, check whether it’s still under Microsoft’s warranty, or look at controllers with magnetic sticks in our pro controller picks.
